Recently I posted a picture on Instagram of my kids at the mall on the day I took them to see Santa. Looking at it later reminded me of a watercolor I did years ago, well before they were born. The painting was called “Monkey Business” and since there’s so much of just that around my house, I decided to make a few prints from that old file and hang one in my hallway. The kids think it’s for them, but really, despite the silliness of the painting, when I pass by it reminds me of the long, quiet days I used to spend leisurely painting for hours on end. Those days are definitely gone for now, but I think they’ll return eventually (right??), and when they do, I'll hang a photo of my kids adoring a mall monkey above my desk. And when I look at it, it’ll remind me of the loud, hectic days I spent painting in sporadic pockets of time and chasing two wild, giggling heathens through the house. Until then, I'll be battening down the hatches and placing my art supplies up on a higher shelf.
